The Ministry of Defence says that George Osborne has signed off £160bn over the next decade for new weapons systems.  These include Trident submarines, even though the government has consistently said that parliament will not vote until after the general election on whether a new Trident fleet should go ahead.  Margaret Hodge, chair of the Commons Public Accounts committee, casts serious doubt on the MoD’s confidence that its weapons programme is “fully funded“, as, between 2000 and 2012, final costs of Britain’s weapons projects were typically 40% higher than the ministry’s initial forecasts.
