Tue 15 Oct: US-UK Mutual Defence Agreement – CND and NIS webinar

Join CND and NIS for this joint briefing on the US-UK Mutual Defence Agreement.

The US-UK Mutual Defence Agreement, the treaty that governs nuclear weapon exchanges between the two states, has been regularly reviewed and extended since it came into force in the 1950s. The current treaty expires at the end of 2024, and in July the Government announced proposed amendments that would make the treaty permanent. This runs counter to the UK’s disarmament obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Parliamentarians in the UK have until 23 October 2024 to raise any objections before the amended treaty comes into force next year.

This joint briefing session by CND and Nuclear Information Service will summarise the main activities under the agreement and the potential impacts of the proposed amendments with plenty of time for questions.

Parliamentarians can sign the Early Day Motion 123 urging a parliamentary debate on the subject.
