On the International Day of Peace, the US carried out a test in the Pacific Ocean of a nuclear weapons delivery system. It carried out a further test on the day of the UN discussions on nuclear disarmament.
Better news is that the US President has spoken on the phone to the Iranian President – the first top-level conversation between the two countries in more than thirty years.
US Professor Francis Boyle, has commented on Obama’s Report on Nuclear Employment Strategy of the United States, which came out in June.
One passage reads, ‘The 2010 Nuclear Posture Review established the Administration’s goal to set conditions that would allow the United States to safely adopt a policy of making deterrence of nuclear attack the sole purpose of U.S. nuclear weapons. Although we cannot adopt such a policy today [my emphasis], the new guidance re-iterates the intention to work towards that goal over time’.
Please ask your MP what the UK policy is with regard to Trident, pointing out that this should be established before a decision is reached about its replacement.
